The Science of Viewing Distance and Visual Acuity

The human eye with normal 20/20 vision can resolve details separated by approximately 1 arcminute (1/60th of a degree, or ~0.00029 radians). When two adjacent pixels are closer together than 1 arcminute from your vantage point, your photoreceptor cells cannot distinguish them as separate dots.

The Viewing Distance Formula

Visual Angle = 1 arcminute = (1/60)° ≈ 0.000290888 radians Distance = (Pixel Spacing ÷ 2) ÷ tan(0.5 arcminute) Distance (inches) ≈ 3438 ÷ PPI Distance (cm) = Distance (inches) × 2.54

Worked Example: 27″ 4K Monitor (163 PPI)

Distance = 3438 ÷ 163.18 = 21.07 inches In centimeters: 21.07 × 2.54 = 53.5 cm (≈ 1.75 feet)

At 21 inches or farther away from a 27″ 4K screen, a person with 20/20 vision will perceive perfectly smooth text and curves, with zero visible pixelation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is optimal viewing distance calculated?

Minimum viewing distance for visual acuity is based on the resolving power of a healthy human eye with 20/20 vision (1 arcminute or 1/60th of a degree): Distance (inches) ≈ 3438 ÷ PPI. Beyond this distance, individual pixels blend into a smooth continuous image.

Why does viewing distance define 'Retina' displays?

Apple's Retina standard is not a fixed PPI number — it is a relationship between PPI and distance. A 460 PPI iPhone held 10–12 inches away, a 254 PPI MacBook held 15–18 inches away, and a 218 PPI 27″ Studio Display viewed from 20–24 inches all provide equivalent perceived sharpness because they subtend the same visual angle.

What is the recommended viewing distance for a 27-inch monitor?

For a 27-inch 1440p monitor (109 PPI), the minimum distance where pixels disappear is ~31 inches (79 cm). For a 27-inch 4K monitor (163 PPI), that distance drops to ~21 inches (53 cm), allowing you to sit closer without noticing pixelation.

What is the difference between visual acuity distance and field-of-view distance?

Visual acuity distance (3438 ÷ PPI) tells you how close you can get before seeing pixels. Field-of-view distance (THX / SMPTE) tells you where to sit for maximum immersion without straining your eyes to take in the whole screen (typically 1.2× to 1.6× the screen diagonal for TVs).

Is this calculator a medical prescription?

No. This calculator uses standard optical geometry and consumer display engineering models. Individual eyesight, ambient lighting, and personal comfort will vary.
