What is Pixel Density and Why Does It Matter?

Pixel density is the fundamental metric of display sharpness. While resolution describes the total number of pixels in a screen buffer, pixel density tells you how tightly those pixels are packed onto the physical panel.

For example, a 4K TV (3840×2160) at 65 inches has roughly 68 PPI, while a 27-inch 4K monitor with the exact same resolution has 163 PPI. The monitor is more than twice as sharp because the same 8.3 million pixels are compressed into a much smaller viewing area.

Worked Example: 27″ 1440p (QHD) Monitor

For a 2560 × 1440 resolution screen with a 27-inch diagonal:

Diagonal Pixels = √(2560² + 1440²) = √(6,553,600 + 2,073,600) = √8,627,200 ≈ 2,937.21 px Pixel Density = 2,937.21 ÷ 27 = 108.79 PPI (≈ 109 PPI)

Resolution is the total count of pixels (e.g. 1920×1080 = 2.07 million pixels). Pixel density is resolution divided by physical area (e.g. 1920×1080 on a 24″ screen = 92 PPI, while on a 15.6″ screen = 141 PPI). Size is what determines density.

What is considered a good pixel density for a monitor?
